History
The history of the Norman Nussbickel Scholarship Award dates back to the Wappingers Falls Chamber of Commerce – one of the original partners in the Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce. Norman Nussbickel served as president of that Chamber for ten years until his death in 1983. It was under Mr. Nussbickel's leadership that the Chamber membership grew from 40 to more than 200 area businesses! And because of Mr. Nussbickel's commitment not only to the Chamber, but to the Dutchess County community, the scholarship was established to honor his legacy by investing in our youth—the leaders and communities of tomorrow.
Rita Nussbickel was a constant presence during Norm’s leadership at the Chamber and was a strong supporter of the organization and the community in her own right. She served as Chair of the Scholarship Committee until her death in 2006 and was very committed to the growth of the fund—as it has helped so many students pursue their dreams of a college education. It is an honor to include her name on this important scholarship fund as a living testament to her commitment to community and the students that she so wonderfully supported for many years.
The Award
This scholarship enables students who have demonstrated leadership qualities in academics, athletics and community to pursue educational opportunities after their four years in high school. Each scholar receives $2,000 immediately prior to entering their freshman year.
Criteria
Students who have demonstrated extraordinary achievement in the areas of community involvement, sportsmanship and academics are selected to interview with the Norman Nussbickel Scholarship Committee, as these were three of the tenets in which Mr. Nussbickel valued most in our youth. Upon final committee decision, the award recipients are announced and presented their scholarship award at a special recognition event hosted by the Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce.
